What does SEO mean?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. Useful content, clear structure, accurate metadata, good performance and sound technical foundations help search engines understand a website and can improve its visibility in relevant search results. No particular ranking can be guaranteed.

Security and reliability

Security is considered throughout the build rather than added as an afterthought.

  • HTTPS, secure forms and server-side input validation
  • Protection against CSRF, XSS and SQL injection
  • Access controls to prevent forced browsing in protected areas
  • Secure sessions, backups and ongoing maintenance
How is a website protected?

A secure website uses several layers of protection. Encrypted connections, careful validation, access checks, secure coding, monitoring and reliable backups reduce the risk of attacks and limit their impact. No website can be guaranteed completely immune from attack.

Frequently asked questions

A straightforward guide to starting costs, what can be included and how a bespoke website differs from a free website builder.

How much does a small-business website cost?

A focused small-business website of up to five pages can start from £600. Every project is discussed individually, and you will receive a clear quotation confirming what is included before any work begins.

Why pay for a website when some services are free?

Free website builders can be useful for testing an idea or creating a basic website with no frills, but you will usually need to choose a template, build the pages and manage the setup yourself. Although the simplest websites may be free, services almost always charge for interactive features such as membership systems, booking systems and e-commerce, as well as options such as using your own domain or removing platform branding.

With G2 Web Works, you are paying for a website planned and built around your business. You work directly with me, I handle the design and technical work, and the result is not dependent on a proprietary website-building platform.

What can be included in a £600 website?

A typical starter website can include a bespoke responsive design, up to five pages, a contact form, essential search-engine setup, basic website visitor statistics and help getting the site live. The exact scope will be agreed with you at the outset.

I do not build websites using WordPress, Weebly or similar website-building platforms. Your site is independently coded, making it easier to move to a different suitable hosting provider in the future.

Will I own and have access to my website?

Yes. Once the project has been paid for in full, you will own the website code created specifically for you. Your domain name will be registered in your name and remain under your control.

You will also have access to automatically updated daily backups of your website folders and databases through cloud storage held in your own account. This means you retain an up-to-date copy of your website and are not tied to G2 Web Works or a particular hosting provider. Any third-party software or services remain subject to their own licences and terms.

Can you build more advanced website features?

Yes. I can provide content management systems, booking systems, membership areas, event calendars, online diaries, shopping carts and complete e-commerce solutions, as well as other bespoke functionality your project may require. Secure, tailored admin areas can give you control over the parts of your website you need to manage, including content, products, bookings, members and events.

If you have something different in mind, we can discuss what is practical and find the right approach. These features can be included in the initial project or added later as your needs grow, and are quoted separately according to the work involved.

Can you provide photography for my website?

Yes. I can provide photography for products, business premises and other website content, as well as prepare and optimise the finished images for online use. Photography can be planned alongside your website and will be quoted separately according to what you need.

Why don’t you use WordPress, Weebly or similar platforms?

Website-building platforms can be suitable for some projects, but they often depend on pre-made themes, plugins or platform-specific features. I prefer to code websites around each client’s actual requirements, giving me direct control over the design, performance, security and functionality.

Platforms, themes and plugins also require regular updates. Occasionally, an update or an incompatibility between components can cause part of a website to stop working. Outdated or poorly maintained third-party components can also create security risks, so platform-based sites need careful ongoing maintenance.

This approach avoids unnecessary platform dependencies and makes the finished website easier to move between suitable hosting providers. You are paying for a website created for your business, rather than access to a particular website-building system.

Are hosting, domains and future updates included?

These are priced separately, but the ongoing cost of a straightforward website can be modest. A domain name typically starts from around £10 per year, depending on the type of domain and provider. Basic website hosting and routine technical maintenance start from around £10 per month.

Substantial content changes, new features and the hosting or maintenance of more complex systems are quoted separately. Written content and photography can also be provided if required. I will explain the likely costs clearly before you commit.

Where will my website be hosted?

I can host and manage your website on the server I normally use, with hosting and routine technical maintenance charged at the agreed rate. This keeps setup, deployment and ongoing support straightforward.

Alternatively, you can purchase a suitable hosting package directly from another provider. You would be responsible for that provider’s account, billing and renewals, and I would need appropriate access to the hosting control panel, files, databases and domain settings while developing, launching and maintaining the website.

Not every hosting package supports every type of website, so it is best to check with me before purchasing one. I can help you choose a suitable package without tying your website to a particular provider.

What if I already have a domain name or website?

That is not a problem. An existing domain name can usually be retained and connected to your new website. If you already have a website, I can review what you have and discuss whether it would be better to improve it, redesign it or replace it. Where appropriate, existing content, images and functionality can be carried across.

A sensible process

Start with what matters most

A project can begin with a focused first version and grow when you are ready. Staged quotes make priorities, costs and future options clear from the outset.
